The Revenue Department of Visakhapatnam district and the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation(GVMC), in the first of a kind joint operation, took procession of nearly 39 acres that was encroached by former Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA of the Gajuwaka Legislative Assembly Palla Srinivasa Rao and removed all the structures on them.
Mr Srinivasa Rao is a key leader of the party and the person in-charge of the Visakhapatnam Parliamentary Constituency and a leader very close to the Leader of the Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu.
The Revenue Department in a special drive has identified 430 acres of government land having a market value of Rs 4,291 crore that had been encroached by TDP leaders in Visakhapatnam district. Former TDP MLA Srinivasa Rao has single handedly encroached huge stretches of land in Gajuwaka area.
The officials put the market value of the land at Rs 669.26 crore. The former MLA along with his relatives took possession of the land and leased out the same to a range of business institutions and was earning a huge sum as rent. Mr Srinivasa Rao leased out the land to establishments like L&T and HPCL for setting up fabrication shops, etc.
Earlier the GVMC demolished a shopping complex being constructed by Mr Srinivasa Rao violating all building plan norms.
Startling facts have come to light in a thorough inquiry conducted by the Revenue Department.
Out of the land that is worth Rs 4,291 crore, land worth Rs 1,691 crore was located in Visakhapatnam Rural Division. While the Government is trying to take stock of the land that has been encroached the Opposition is trying to politicise it by claiming that leaders of the Backward Classes are being targeted because they were not joining the ruling YSR Congress Party.
Meanwhile, Minister for Tourism Muttamsetti Srinivas demanded opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu to respond to the allegations made against the TDP leaders grabbing land in Visakhapatnam.
The Minister said TDP leader Palla Srinivasa Rao, encroached 49 acres of land which had a market value of Rs 791.41 crore . The previous government failed to take action on land encroachments in Visakhapatnam and didn’t make the SIT (Special Investigation Team) report public, the Minister said.
After forming the government, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy constituted an SIT to investigate the land scams in Visakhapatnam and announced that action would be taken based on the report.
He said that the State government was taking back all the lands which were encroached by the TDP leaders and was going to distribute them to the poor.
In the last two years various development programmes had been taken up in Visakhapatnam, with an aim to develop the city. He stated that Mr Chandrababu Naidu had spent money from land sale in Visakhapatnam on development of Hyderabad city in United Andhra Pradesh.
